BACK TO: JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT
A Panel of Experts stands as a strong example of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s early visual language and remains highly sought after by collectors drawn to character-driven, historically significant works. Crossed-out words, cartoon-like figures, crowns, and comic book sound effects reinforce the work’s humour and cultural critique, while references to Saturday morning cartoons reflect Basquiat’s early ambition to be a cartoonist.
The fistfight at the top left is a stick figure depiction of a real encounter in a New York nightclub between two women in Basquiat’s life: his girlfriend Suzanne Mallouk, whom he nicknamed “Venus,” and his lover Madonna. Although a copyright symbol appears beside Madonna’s name, she was not yet a celebrity.
